The historic 17th century harbour, enhanced by nautical sculptures, dramatic lighting effects and a brand new marina, is the focus for spectacular maritime events and activities including the occasional visit of tall sailing ships.

It is famous for its lakes, forests and mountains (or fells), and its associations with William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor, Coleridge and other Lake Poets and many other famous persons such as the marvellous Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin.
